Beer Tours: Bermondsey Beer Mile

The Bermondsey Beer Mile in South East London is easily accessed, with the first of many stops a short walk from the Bermondsey underground station. Arriving in London at Waterloo station meant we were only a couple of stops away from Bermondsey on the Jubilee Line.

The time to take on the mile is a Saturday afternoon as this is when the breweries and tap houses, located within the arches of the sprawling train bridges, open their doors to the public. And be aware, on a nice day like the unseasonably mild Saturday in February that we visited, these limited spaces fill up very quickly! (We had to turn away from a couple of our planned stops).

The best stops on the mile are the breweries, we particularly enjoyed the beer on offer from FourPure and Partizan, but the viaduct tap houses and more traditional pubs in the area also have a fantastic range. In most cases we were spoilt for choice.

After seeing off a few high ABV’s, some of the latter stops on the mile became indistinguishable from others. Each of the venues could do with some extra character of their own, perhaps something to take away (branded beer mat, stickers, postcard)? Partizan had some cool artwork on display and prints for sale at £15, but I was worried this wouldn’t survive the rest of the night ahead.

The food options were more limited than we had expected. FourPure looked to have a good set up outside their arch, but only had one option on the menu. As the vegetarian of the group I fell victim to the usual unimaginative ‘mushroom’ alternative and settled for chips when we eventually stopped in a more developed arch bar, with a fully built in kitchen. In short, eat before you start the mile, or plan ahead.
