Kneejerk commentary

Last night this statement from the band Goo Goo Dolls was posted regarding their new music video and a decision to severe their ties with the director.

It’s a parody, and I’ll admit, I fell for it.

Perhaps because I felt a bit silly, I wasn’t sure where I stood on this making light of such statements, that usually relate to quite serious matters, as piece of promotion material.

Actually, I think it might have done me a favour. After reading the statement I went and Google’d the directors name to find out what the controversy was. This forced me to realise that I go looking for this information, without hesitation, ALL the time.

Sure, the intention of Warner Records was to draw attention to the video, single and upcoming album. This also succeeded in helping me to realise a bit of a depressing pattern.

As quick as I am to don my detective hat I’m normally far less inclined to say anything on the matter prematurely. The comment sections across the band’s social media accounts are quite something though. It’s ‘Black Mirror’-esque seeing people play out their same parts each time these scenarios occur.

I think there’s some value in a reminder once in a while that we all act so habitually and for something unexpected that comes along to disrupt that, forcing us to pull back and see a bigger, perhaps unsettling, picture.

All that aside, here’s the song.
